The IONIQ 5 robotaxi was designed from the outset as a production vehicle purpose-built for robotaxi service. Hyundai and Motional teams collaborated for months on sensor placement, ensuring 360-degree perception with redundant coverage. The vehicle includes hardware modifications for autonomous operation: additional compute hardware, sensor mounts integrated into the body design, rider-facing displays, speakers, microphones, LED exterior lights for communication, and modified door-lock systems for app-based access.
