Executive Summary
MA-LIO is an asynchronous multiple-LiDAR-inertial odometry method. It targets a practical multi-LiDAR problem: more LiDARs increase field of view and robustness, but the scans are not perfectly synchronized, their fields of view differ, and transforming points between LiDAR frames can add time-dependent error.
MA-LIO uses continuous-time IMU modeling to transform points across LiDARs and propagates point-wise inter-LiDAR uncertainty. The uncertainty depends on state covariance, point acquisition time, and point range. It also introduces a localization weight that adjusts the balance between prior and measurement residuals in degenerate environments such as tunnels and narrow corridors.

Sensor and State Model
Sensor suite:
- Two or more LiDARs.

The key state is a body trajectory that can be queried at individual point acquisition times. A point from LiDAR i is transformed through the body trajectory into the reference frame used by the optimizer, while its uncertainty increases with time offset, range, and current state uncertainty.

Sigma_p = f(Sigma_state(t_i), range_i, acquisition_time_i)This is more realistic than treating a full scan from every LiDAR as a single rigid timestamped cloud.
Timing and Calibration
MA-LIO reduces the need for strict synchronization, but it does not eliminate calibration requirements:
- Inter-LiDAR extrinsics must be known or accurately estimated before use.
- LiDAR-IMU extrinsics and IMU noise parameters remain critical.
- Per-point timestamps are needed for the full benefit.
- Clock drift or wrong timestamp conventions can still defeat the model.
For production multi-LiDAR AVs, MA-LIO is a useful reference for handling asynchronous packets from roof, bumper, side, and blind-spot LiDARs.
Degenerate and Dynamic Scenes
The method explicitly discusses degenerate cases such as tunnels and narrow corridors. Multiple LiDARs help by increasing FOV, but they do not make the scene observable if all sensors see the same weak geometry. The localization weight helps avoid over-trusting poor measurement residuals.
Dynamic objects still require separate filtering. Multi-LiDAR coverage can increase the number of dynamic returns if the vehicle is surrounded by traffic, pedestrians, or GSE.
Evaluation Guidance
Track:
- ATE/RPE with one LiDAR, synchronized multi-LiDAR, and asynchronous multi-LiDAR settings.
- Sensitivity to artificial time offsets.
- Performance by LiDAR FOV overlap.
- Point-wise uncertainty ablation.
- Degeneracy-weight ablation in tunnels/corridors.
- Runtime as LiDAR count and point rate increase.
Integration Readiness
MA-LIO has public code and is compatible with varied LiDAR manufacturers and scanning patterns according to the paper and repository. The reference stack is ROS/catkin research software with GPL-2.0 licensing, so product teams need license review, ROS 2 integration work, deterministic timing, and calibration tooling.
Limitations
- Multiple LiDARs increase calibration and compute burden.
- Poor extrinsics can be hidden by uncertainty weighting but still bias maps.
- The method is odometry-focused; loop closure, map lifecycle, and global localization are separate.
- Dynamic scenes need object filtering.
- Severe shared degeneracy remains hard even with wider FOV.
